Province of prosperity?

Plight of the homeless warrants council action

The StarPhoenix

What’s wrong with city council? It spends $462,000 to put lights on a bridge while the homeless disabled guy who lives under a bridge probably says to himself: “I’ve still got nothing, but, by gosh, at least I can see it now!”

I see councillors consider handing out funds to an art gallery, waiving taxes for a movie theatre and paying for expensive projects along the riverbank to attract tourism. How much less would it cost to authorize the use of a vacant building, where cots could be placed to provide shelter during cold winter months to those who have no place at all?

I’m not advocating handouts to those who could potentially work for a living. I’m referring to those who can’t work and whose disability cheques aren’t enough to pay ever-increasing rental rates in Saskatoon.

Some of the unfortunate can get into the Salvation Army or Friendship Inn, but these shelters are all booked up.

City council will get my respect when no person in Saskatoon risks hypothermia under a bridge while the rest of us are admiring the pretty, not to mention expensive, lights on that bridge.

We would all do well to remember that any one of us is but a few paycheques away from possible homelessness at any given time, due to layoffs, cutbacks, etc.

I propose a fundraiser for the homeless.

City councillors should spend one night during the winter under one of Saskatoon’s bridges and sign up as many sponsors as they can find. All proceeds would go to the homeless and councillors would get a taste of what it’s really like when you’ve got nowhere to go.

Well, if I’ve never seen a Saskparty front I certainly have now. After having gotten this same one-sided trash story in my mailbox I decided to have a look. I don’t know what is more moronic, thinking that Lorne Calvert is responsible for every evil in Saskatchewan or thinking the Sask Party (name changed to protect the guilty) who are ALL big business will do a thing for those two unnamed vagrants you photographed. If you’re so concerned perhaps you should have put the cash you put into the color flyers into buying them a hot meal or better yet..take them home to live with you. You want hardship for the working (and non-working in this case) resident..vote in the party prefer rich folks.

First off, let me clarify one major thing for you. The campaigning that injusticebusters/iZon Injustice has done over the past months was not and is not funded in anyway by Sask. Party. Furthermore, injusticebusters/iZon Injustice stands for justice and if you look at the track record for the past 16 years under the NDP’s reign, one can clearly see that they do not stand for justice or anything resembling it. The number of malicious prosecutions stemming from this province, at the hands of government employees is astonishing, but the part that is even more astonishing is the fact that this NDP government refuse to admit their wrongs and continue to cover this up. This justice system must change and if you aren’t willing to admit you are wrong, then where does the change come in? This government could do so much more by way of programs and shelters etc, to get these people on their feet, but so much money has been wasted for things that should have never happened in the first place. i.e. malicious prosecution and wrongful convictions etc. These poeple deserved to be comoensated for what happened to them, The point is it never should have hapened int he fisrt place.
